The Hollywood actress, Angelina Jolie, shocked many when she joined Instagram and used her first post to criticize the current president’s handling of the situation in Afghanistan.
As a liberal among the Hollywood elite, her comments have sparked a heated debate surrounding America’s withdrawal from the country.
In just three days after joining Instagram, Jolie had already managed to gain more than 7.6 million followers by posting an anti-Biden comment that gained her over 2.1 million followers within three hours of posting.
In it, she wrote about visiting Afghanistan two weeks before 9/11 and seeing refugees who were fleeing from the Taliban at that time: “It is sickening to watch Afghans being displaced yet again out of the fear and uncertainty that has gripped their country.”
She went on to express her disappointment with how America handled leaving Afghanistan: “To spend so much time and money, to have bloodshed and lives lost only to come to this, is a failure almost impossible to understand.”
Jolie further elaborated on these thoughts in an opinion piece for Time Magazine titled “The People Of Afghanistan Deserve So Much Better Than This,” where she criticized President Biden for failing to plan out his transition properly.
It was shameful how they left the nation with no real strategy or leverage going forward.
She highlighted how civilians are particularly vulnerable now without any support from their government, something that would be especially detrimental given Taliban’s history of targeting women and civil society members in particular.
Unsurprisingly, reactions towards Jolie’s post have been divided along political lines.
While some slammed her for speaking out against Biden’s decisions, others have supported her stance against what they see as unjust.
