ICYMI – Former Trump Attorney General William Barr has finally chimed in on the Trump indictment.
I was shocked to see him so critical of it.
Let’s be honest… there is no love lost between Trump and Barr, so the fact that Barr is calling this a farce tell you everything you need to know about how bogus these charges are.
Abomination
Barr did not hold back in his criticism of the charges by Manhattan DA Alvin Bragg.
He stated, “Obviously, we don’t have the indictment, so there’s a little bit of speculation involved. But based on the news reports, if they’re accurate, this is an abomination.
“It’s the epitome of the abuse of prosecutorial power to bring a case that would not be brought against anyone else.
“They are going after the man, not a crime.
“And the legal theory, frankly, is pathetically weak.”
Barr went on breaking down the evidence.
He stated, “The claim is that [recording the Cohen reimbursements as legal payments] is false and therefore violated a misdemeanor statute in the first instance against false documents.
“I actually don’t think that’s a valid claim in this case, because the statute actually requires that it be done with the intent to defraud.
“They’re assuming that the payments were a campaign finance violation because they were effectively a contribution to the Trump campaign.
“I can tell you that’s not the law.
“I don’t think that’s how the Justice Department would view it.”
Put personal feelings aside about Barr, the man is a legally brilliant, so we can take what he says to heart in terms of the merit of the case.
However, all that means nothing with an anti-Trump judge in place and a jury pool that is likely filled with anti-Trumpers waiting to put Trump behind bars.
