Becoming Speaker of the House is going to be far more difficult than House Minority Leader Kevin McCarthy (R-CA) ever thought.
He faced a challenger during the election process, but he managed to come out with the win.
However, unless he makes a deal soon, we could have a rudderless House to start the new session.
Deal or No Deal
The House Freedom Caucus is not just rolling over on this.
Led by Chairman Rep. Scott Perry (R-PA), the group stated, “The American people send us to Washington to do what we said we would do — namely, to limit spending and fight to advance a conservative agenda.
“We must organize ourselves to ensure there is a ‘check’ on the swamp and reform the status quo.”
The letter later stated, “While difficult in practice, it is an important mechanism to restore trust and provide accountability.”
Rep. Andrew Clyde (R-GA), a member of the group, stated, “Leader McCarthy is a friend, and I’ve established a good working relationship with him over the past two years as the freshman representative to the Elected Leadership Committee.
“While I continue my consideration of who I will vote for, the items presented are simply what I expect and require for anyone seeking the responsibility of serving as Speaker — as accountability of the Speaker to the membership is paramount.”
I have seen the demands, and they are far from unreasonable.
Some of these demands I have mentioned on these pages, such as single-issue legislation.
If McCarthy does not want to deal with the members of this caucus, he will have to make a deal with moderate Democrats to get the votes he needs.
Who he decides to deal with here will tell us just about everything we need to know about McCarthy.
