A top former FBI official is slamming current FBI leadership.
His concern is that the bureau is being far too aggressive in what should be more low-profile arrests.
I am speaking of former FBI Deputy Assistant Director of the Counterterrorism Division Terry Turchie.
Too Much
Turchie, in addition to his counterterrorism role, was head of the Unabomber task force.
If you know anything about that case, the arrest of the Unabomber was made without SWAT agents and kept very low-key.
Why? Because Turchie believes bringing in SWAT elevates the tension of a situation and that is not the purpose of SWAT.
He was very critical of SWAT being used to arrest January 6 rioters.
He stated, “The more you escalate the use of force, the more you take a chance of having possible injuries in some catastrophic failure of agents and civilians alike.”
On taking down Ted Kaczynski, he stated, “This was a very, very violent terrorist, and he was becoming more unstable.
“Even there, we didn’t use the SWAT team for the arrest.”
He believes using SWAT in the January 6 arrests was done on purpose and politically motivated.
Turchie stated, “You don’t speak up and get involved with the wrong political side, or we’ll teach you a lesson.”
Rest assured, the FBI that is there today is a far call from the FBI that Turchie left two decades ago.
