I was floored this weekend when I heard Smash Mouth lead singer Steve Harwell had been put into hospice.
At the time, reports stated that he had about a week to live.
Sadly, he did not even last 24 hours, passing away on Monday.
He’s Gone
Smash Mouth has had a revolving door through the years.
However, through it all, up until 2021, Harwell and bassist Paul De Lisle were always there.
In 2016, Harwell’s world started to fall apart.
He collapsed on stage, then, in 2017, he reportedly had some heart issues.
We now found out that he was diagnosed with cardiomyopathy a decade ago, which has been at the root of all his problems.
The culmination of this came in 2021, when he was slurring his words on stage, which turned into him spitting venom at fans.
That would be his last performance.
After the show, he retired, stating, “Ever since I was a kid, I dreamed of being a Rockstar performing in front of sold-out arenas and have been so fortunate to live out that dream.
“To my bandmates, it’s been an honor performing with you all these years and I can’t think of anyone else I would have rather gone on this wild journey with.
“To our loyal and amazing fans, thank you, all of this was possible because of you.
“I’ve tried so hard to power through my physical and mental health issues, and to play in front of you one last time, but I just wasn’t able to.”
I prefer to remember him during better times…
Rest in peace, Steve.
