Pope Emeritus Benedict XVI was not in power very long, relatively speaking, but he was well-respected.
Sadly, his life came to an end this weekend.
Yet, his legacy grew only stronger when his last words were revealed.
The Last Words
The news of Benedict’s last words was revealed by Archbishop Georg Gaenswein.
He was not in the room at the time, but a nurse who was relayed the story to him.
The Archbishop stated, “Benedict XVI, with a faint voice but in a very distinct way, said in Italian, ‘Lord, I love you.’
“I wasn’t there in that moment, but the nurse a little later recounted it.
“They were his last comprehensible words, because afterwards, he wasn’t able to express himself any more.”
Benedict retired from the Papacy in 2013 after it was revealed that he was having health problems.
Pope Francis was eventually elected to take his place, with Benedict living out his days in a monastery on Vatican grounds.
His coffin was scheduled for an open viewing Monday through Wednesday.
The Vatican is expecting tens of thousands of mourners to come to see the Pope as he lies at the monastery where he lived his final years.
