If Justice Sotomayor is not careful, she will find herself getting canceled.

In a very surprising ruling, Sotomayor ruled against a student LGBTQ+ group.

The group was suing a Jewish university, Yeshiva University, to be formally recognized as a student group on campus.

Blocked

YU Pride Alliance was hoping to have a recognized student group on campus.

The school, however, declined, citing a religious exemption.

The question at hand was because the charter of the school did not cite it being a religious institution, could it block the student group?

New York County Supreme Court Judge Lynn Kotler said it could not, and ruled in favor of the student group.

Kotler ruled that the school must “immediately grant plaintiff YU Pride Alliance the full equal accommodations, advantages, facilities and privileges afforded to all other student groups at Yeshiva University.”

The order further stated that the school’s president to be “permanently restrained from continuing their refusal to officially recognize the YU Pride Alliance as a student organization because of the members’ sexual orientation or gender and/or YU Pride Alliance’s status, mission, and/or activities on behalf of LGBTQ students.”

The school appealed to the Supreme Court, and the case fell under Sotomayor’s jurisdiction.

She put a temporary block on the order on Friday night, creating quite an uproar in the progressive community.

Most of us would have thought that Sotomayor would have deferred to the lower court on this one, but she did not.
