For most of the last month, the left has been lobbing attacks at Justice Clarence Thomas.
One of those attacks was that Thomas did not report a Super Bowl ring that was allegedly given to him by Cowboys owner Jerry Jones.
Thomas’ inner circle is now pushing back against those claims.
Lies…
The allegations that were made against Thomas are dicey at best, mostly because the alleged violations were not actually violations against the current code of ethics for the Supreme Court.
We can argue all day about the optics of a “friend” taking Thomas on a trip, but if that friend was never before Thomas in a case, there is little to the charge.
They would have to prove that Thomas fixed a case in favor of that friend, and that has yet to occur.
If you look at the trips other justices, including the liberal justices, have accepted from friends and donors, there was nothing odd in what Thomas was doing.
I have always said he should have played it safe and reported the trips and gifts, but that still does not mean he violated any ethics rules.
You want to fix the issue, just say that justices cannot accept ANY gifts or trips, nothing, from anyone. I would absolutely get behind that to protect the integrity of the court.
One of the gifts that Thomas received was a ring celebrating a Cowboys Super Bowl win, but Thomas’ team is now saying that the ring was a replica, not the same extremely expensive one that the players, coaches, and employees of the team receive.
The New York Times reported, “Jones gave him a Super Bowl ring. He attended the Cowboys’ training camp, and when the team played in Washington, he sat in the owner’s box.”
A former Thomas staffer stated, “It was a replica, it had hardly any value.
“It was just used as a paperweight.
“I was there, I was working for the Justice at the time, and I can assure you it was just a replica.
“I saw it, I held it, I handled it.”
A real ring costs more than $80,000. A replica is basically something they give away to fans, and costs only a few dollars. The latest eBay sale for a replica ring when for about $12.
Mark Paoletta, who co-authored “Created Equal: Clarence Thomas in his own words,” stated, “I expect the New York Times to issue a retraction on this falsehood, and an apology to Justice Thomas.”
And oh, by the way, Thomas did report receiving that ring in a 1994 disclosure form.
Paoletta added, “Justice Thomas triggers the Left because he is a Black conservative who has never bowed to the left’s demand that he thinks a certain way based on the color of his skin.
“It’s offensive and racist, but that’s what the Left demands. And the media have now amped up these attacks and smears because Justice Thomas’ jurisprudence is now consistently garnering a majority on the Court.
“This has nothing to do with ethics, it’s all about trying to undermine the Court’s integrity now that it is no longer acting like a super legislature implementing left-wing policies.”
Thomas, like Senator Tim Scott (R-S.C.) is attacked because he is a threat to the left, just as Paoletta stated.
He does not walk the line they want him to, so they continue to try to take him out at all costs.
