As I am sure you know by now, Senator Feinstein’s (D-CA) passing means that Governor Gavin Newsom gets to appoint her replacement to finish out the rest of her term.
Newsom has picked EMILY’s List president Laphonza Butler for the job.
There is a lot to unpack with this pick, and it all proves just how corrupt our government is.
Blatant Payoff
Before Butler worked for EMILY’s List, she was a political consultant.
One of her clients was Gavin Newsom.
Another major client of hers was Kamala Harris, having worked for her during the 2020 election as well as going back to her days as a Senator.
Not only that but while she was working for EMILY’s List, the organization committed to spending $10 million to help Kamala improve her profile heading into the 2024 election.
The organization, in case you were not aware, promotes pro-choice female candidates for office, especially women of color.
The kicker in all of this is that Butler does not even live in California any longer.
When she took the job at EMILY’s List, she relocated to the DC area, now setting up shop in Maryland.
Yet, she was just named as the replacement for Feinstein in California.
Currently, the 2024 race for Feinstein’s seat is being dominated by Reps. Adam Schiff and Katie Porter, who are sitting at 20 and 17% respectively.
In third is Rep. Barbara Lee, at about 7%, who many thought should be the person named by Newsom since he promised to put a black woman in that seat.
With Butler now in there, if she decides to run, she could turn this race on its ear, which would be bad news for both Porter and Schiff.
Like I said, it just goes to show how corrupt the system is when a Governor appoints an activist that helped put him into office over more qualified candidates.
