Ticks are small, but they can be incredibly dangerous.
After a farmer passed away from a tick bite, researchers found that he was infected with an unknown virus named the “Bourbon Virus”.
This story is one of many about the potential dangers of ticks and why you should do whatever it takes to protect yourself from them.
Getting a tick once or twice in your lifetime is pretty common, especially if you live in a particularly rugged or forested area.
But ticks carry Lyme disease, which can be incredibly dangerous – even deadly.
In this case, the farmer was bitten by a tick and died mysteriously.
After his death, researchers linked his mysterious illness to an unknown virus now known as the “Bourbon Virus” – so far he is the only reported case in the United States.
Infectious disease expert Dr. Dana Hawkinson says that while this virus has been seen elsewhere in the world (Europe, Africa and Asia), it had never been identified in the western hemisphere before this case.
It’s important for everyone who lives near wooded areas to take precautions against ticks since they can carry such serious illnesses like Lyme disease and Bourbon Virus.
One way to protect yourself against ticks is by wearing long pants tucked into socks when walking through wooded areas.
If you’re going to be outside for extended periods of time or on long hikes make sure you check yourself for any signs of any ticks that may have attached themselves onto your clothing or skin during your travels.
You should also use insect repellent containing DEET when going outdoors as well as do regular checks on your pets (since they often pick up ticks).
And always keep an eye out for signs of infection from bites – look out for redness around where you were bitten paired with flu-like symptoms such as fever, chills and fatigue. If these symptoms appear after being bitten by a tick then seek medical advice immediately.
Ticks may seem harmless at first glance but don’t let their size fool you – they can pack some seriously deadly viruses like Lyme Disease and Bourbon Virus which can cause severe health issues if not treated properly.
