The jockeying among allies of Russia and Ukraine continues.
China has been making a lot of headlines over possible lethal aid for Russia.
Now, however, China appears to be taking a different tact.
Let’s Negotiate Peace
China is now encouraging Russia and Ukraine to come together and start peace negotiations.
China’s Foreign Ministry’s website stated, “All parties should support Russia and Ukraine in working in the same direction and resuming direct dialogue as quickly as possible.
“Nuclear weapons must not be used and nuclear wars must not be fought. The threat or use of nuclear weapons should be opposed.”
China also appeared to condemn the practice of Russia attacking civilian targets.
It stated, “Parties to the conflict should strictly abide by international humanitarian law, avoid attacking civilians or civilian facilities.”
On the surface, this would seem like a big win for Biden, but the administration is not buying it.
US Deputy Secretary of State Wendy Sherman believes this is a bit of a smoke screen, however, stating, “My assessment is the PRC [People’s Republic of China] is trying to both increase its standing in the international community by saying that it’s willing to mediate and help bring this horrifying invasion to an end.
“And at the same time, they are committed to their no-limits partnership with Russia.
“And we have, certainly, concern and growing concern about that partnership and the PRC’s support for this invasion.”
