CBS News host Margaret Brennan is once again being ridiculed on social media, this time for claiming that free speech caused the Holocaust.
In recent weeks, Brennan has been ruthlessly mocked on social media because of her insane rhetoric, including a moment where she tried to downplay the fact that Afghan refugees were not properly vetted under the Biden administration, leading to Vice President JD Vance’s now-iconic response, “I don’t really care, Margaret,” which has become a meme.

Brennan’s latest unhinged rhetoric has prompted even more mockery, as she dared to assert that the Holocaust was caused by the weaponization of “free speech.” She made the remarks during a “Face the Nation” interview with Secretary of State Marco Rubio on February 16.
“He was standing in a country where free speech was weaponized to conduct a genocide,” Brennan said while discussing Vance’s recent speech in Munich, Germany, where he called on European countries to protect free speech and protect citizens from migrant crime.
Rubio immediately fired back against the CBS host’s ridiculous comment, stating: “Free speech was not used to conduct a genocide. The genocide was conducted by an authoritarian Nazi regime that happened to also be genocidal because they hated Jews and they hated minorities… There was no free speech in Nazi Germany. There was no opposition in Nazi Germany… So that’s not an accurate reflection of history.”

The CBS news host faced significant backlash on social media over her comment, including from GOP lawmakers like Sen. Eric Schmitt (R-MO), who posted on X: “Free speech caused the Holocaust is an insanely stupid take.”

In a post thread about Brennan’s comments, writer John Hasson highlighted a fact that any sane person knows — that the Nazis actually outlawed free speech. He shared a screenshot that pointed out how the German constitution previously guaranteed freedom of speech and freedom of the press, but “Through decrees and laws, the Nazis abolished these civil rights and destroyed German democracy. Starting in 1934, it was illegal to criticize the Nazi government.”

“I’m glad Margaret Brennan blamed free speech for the rise of the Nazis,” columnist John Podhoretz wrote. “It’s always a virtue when a person in a position of authority and influence who was elevated beyond her station reveals her ineptitude and folly–so that the world can see her clearly henceforth.”

“This is the first time I’ve heard the theory that the Holocaust wasn’t conducted with gas chambers but with free speech zones,” National Review writer Michael Brendan Dougherty said.

“Can we just talk about how a prominent American news anchor actually believes Nazi Germany had free speech and that supposed free speech is to blame for the Holocaust? That’s both deeply arrogant and deeply ignorant,” radio host Erick Erickson wrote.

“I legitimately don’t know how ignorant you have to be to claim the holocaust happened as a result of free speech,” Meghan McCain argued. “This woman doesn’t deserve to host this show and Republicans should stop rewarding this s—t by going on it.”

Meanwhile, David Sacks highlighted the process by which American media has fallen to such a low point.
“How did we get here? The media is so committed to the narrative that ‘Trump is Hitler’ that anything the administration does must be portrayed as fascist. Hence, if VP Vance gives a speech urging the Europeans to live up their values on free speech, it must now be the case that free speech is a Nazi value. History must be retconned accordingly. Goebbels himself would be impressed by the audacity of this Big Lie!” he wrote, adding: “This represent[s] the entire Legacy Media. Their pathological hatred of Trump has led them into a cul-de-sac of absurdity and irrelevance. They have zero credibility left.”
