Everyday Hero Sailor Takes Extraordinary Steps To Save A Life
Navy Counselor First-Class Ryan P. Lighten was slamming down his workout and letting those endorphins ride when somebody notified him of an emergency happening nearby.
“I was working out on the bench press with my earbuds in, when one of my Future Sailors ran up to me with a scared look on his face, yelling frantically,” Lighten said to a writer affiliated with the Navy Talent Acquisition Group Southwest
“He told me there was a man lying on the floor [who was] unresponsive and not breathing.”
The 29-year-old was a man on a mission when he headed over, but he experienced a flicker of doubt. It meant little though, he had all the training he needed from the US Navy.
“My first thought was, ‘I hope I can remember my training,’” Lighten said. “Future Sailor Dominic Rodgers cleared a path for me, telling everyone in the vicinity that I knew CPR.
“Rodgers told me later that he knew the Navy provided CPR training to all of its personnel, which was why he ran straight to me.”
Before he began, Lighten informed those around him that they had to get clear of the area, instead urging them to call 911.
Lighten did mouth-to-mouth resuscitation for 15 minutes and then the man began to breathe on his own. Eventually, he was transported to Temecula Valley Hospital after first responders arrived.
“The guy never really saw who had helped him,” Lighten later said. “I hope I get the opportunity to formally introduce myself to him in the future.
“I would like to wish the gentleman I helped a speedy recovery and healthy future.”
Lighten said he has to give all of the credit to the Navy, if not for the training that helped him to save this man’s life. The Navy likewise helped him to better himself and also provided him and his family a better future.
Lighten said “The Navy has given me a brighter outlook on my life and a more promising future for my son,” he said.
Lighten also really hopes that this incident will influence others to join the Navy or one more branch of the military.
“I frequently volunteer at the local high schools, animal hospitals and retirement homes with the purpose of giving back to my community and spreading Navy awareness,” he said. “The Navy has helped me by putting me in a position to grow as a leader.”
