A man at the forefront of the fight to expand the role of women in politics and journalism has died.
Pat Carney, a Canadian politician, passed away at the age of 88.
Carney was the first female member of Parliament ever elected in British Columbia.
A Legend
Carney was actually born in Shanghai, China.
She started her career as a journalist after completing her education in Canada.
She also worked as an economic consultant in the Northwest Territories and Yukon.
Carney then made her transition into politics.
Carney was a trailblazer, having served as the minister of energy, minister of international trade, and president of the Treasury Board in Brian Mulroney’s cabinet.
In every one of those positions, you can add “first woman.”
Carney, a conservative, often told a story about a woman she engaged with when she first entered politics.
She stated, “The benign-looking senior snatched her hand away and snapped viciously: ‘I would rather my hand withered and dropped off before shaking hands with a Conservative.’ She then walked away.”
I guess conservatives are looked down upon just as much in Canada as they are here in the United States.
