The Maryland Attorney General’s office recently concluded an investigation of an archdiocese.
What it found was quite disturbing.
Almost 200 members, mostly clergy, were found to have sexually abused children.
Predators
It is no secret that the Catholic Church went out of its way to protect predators within the hierarchy for many years.
So, it was no surprise to see that some of these cases went back decades.
A total of 199 Catholic clergy members and administrators were found to have abused these children in the diocese.
Baltimore AG Anthony Brown stated, “This Report illustrates the depraved, systemic failure of the Archdiocese to protect the most vulnerable — the children it was charged to keep safe.
“Based on hundreds of thousands of documents and untold stories from hundreds of survivors, it provides, for the first time in the history of this State, a public accounting of more than 60 years of abuse and cover-up.
“Time and again, the Archdiocese chose to safeguard the institution and avoid scandal instead of protecting the children in its care.”
The earliest case listed in the report dates all the way back to 1940.
Baltimore Archbishop William Lori offered up an apology, but that simply is not good enough.
The church knew these things were happening and often transferred clergy to another parish or moved them out of the country before anything could happen to them.
It is time to start putting these monsters in jail and make them pay for their crimes.
