ICYMI – The mayor of Clearwater, FL, gets some major props from me.
That man just up and quit his job.
Why did he do it?
Because his city council insists on more spending even though there is a budget shortfall.
Not Our Money
What is so infuriating about this story is what they were spending the money on.
It was not like it was some life-or-death program to benefit the residents.
It was a $90 million allocation for the construction of a new city hall and municipal building!
The now-former Mayor of Clearwater, Frank Hibbard, stated, “We’ve had very little debt, but the spreadsheets that we were looking at this past Monday showed a number of projects and the funding shortfall was a quarter of a billion dollars.
“Local government and government in general needs to be very careful with their resources and also be more creative in the way we solve problems.”
He then stated, “I’m concerned where the city is going because this is simple math and we’re not doing very well on the test.
“In good conscience for my family, for my own health and other things, I can’t remain the mayor.”
Don’t worry, though, the city council that is adding $90 million to a spreadsheet that already has $250 million in red on the books says they can make the decisions the mayor usually handles.
