The Monday after the NFL regular season ends is called Black Monday for a reason.
This is the day when there are usually mass firings.
One coach had already been fired earlier in the season.
Lovie Smith, the head coach of the Houston Texans, did not even make it to Monday when he got the news.
Gone!
Smith was asked after the game if he had heard the rumors that he was going to get canned.
He replied, “A couple things, and that’s all I’m going to say about that.
“First off, there are reports. I don’t know what the reports are. . . Do I expect to be back? Yeah, I expect to be back. Absolutely.”
His expectations were not met, as he was let go before the night would end.
Including interim head coach Romeo Crennel, Smith was the third straight black coach in the last three years to lead this team for only a single year.
That brought about accusations of setting black coaches up to fail by former Washington QB Robert Griffin III…

Generally speaking, I believe coaches should be given at least three years to get their program rolling, but with consecutive records of 4-8, 4-13, and 3-13-1, it is understandable why ownership did not feel any of these coaches had this team pointed in the right direction.
