There is a general belief that if Joe Biden decides to back off the ballot in 2024, Gavin Newsom will be the top pick.
Bill Maher just dropped a dose of reality on the California governor.
The problem for Newsom… he is white, and he is male… two boxes the Democrats do not like to have checked for candidates right now.
The Checked Box Obsession
Maher was talking about the diversity issue in the Democrat Party with openly gay Colorado Governor Jared Polis.
He noted that it seems unlikely that we would see two straight white men on a ticket in the future.
Polis took a different approach in terms of Maher’s idea of a diverse ticket, stating, “It’s not a bad thing that the Democratic Party wants to look like America. I mean, I think it is good that you have a party, you know, on race, on gender on all these different on faith, on all these different factors. I mean, you want to look like America.”
Maher responded, “It is a good thing. But the question, though, is it the priority?
“I think that’s what people hesitate sometimes about the Democrats. Is it more of a priority than things like merit that should matter more? Is it more of a priority than facts or science?”
At the end of the discussion he had some bad news for Newsom, stating, “And it’s perfect because no straight White guys.
“The last thing you want is a straight White guy. Sorry Gavin Newsom!”
