Here we go again, another GOP Speaker-Designate has been chosen…and here’s hoping its the last one. Following a closed-door meeting, the race for House Speaker within the GOP culminated with Louisiana Representative Mike Johnson emerging as the consensus candidate.
On Tuesday, October 24, Minnesota’s Tom Emmer abruptly withdrew his candidacy after facing a scathing post from former President Donald Trump on Truth Social. The floodgates opened to new contenders vying for the position of Speaker and it was ultimately decided that Johnson was best suited for the role.

The roll call vote came out in favor of Johnson who received 128 votes, with 29 going to Rep. Byron Donalds. Nearly all members signaled their willingness to back him on the House floor, with only three opting to vote “present” and 22 absentees altogether.
Following the results, Johnson expressed his intent to discuss matters further with these members individually in order to ensure full support moving forward. His Liberty Score is currently at 74%, indicating he is highly respected by his peers and colleagues alike – something that is essential when leading such a large group of people.

Mike Johnson has been part of Congress since 2017 and boasts an impressive record which includes initiating the Texas Amicus Brief in 2020 and voting against certifying election results due to what he believed were fraudulent circumstances. He supported President Trump’s travel ban on terrorist hotbed countries and served as part of Trump’s legal defense team during both Senate impeachment trials in 2019/2020.
On social issues, Johnson is decidedly conservative, introducing laws aimed at protecting children from sexualization and transgenderization via federally funded institutions being one example that stands out amongst many others.

Johnson’s experience combined with his dedication towards achieving better versions of already existing policies make him a prime candidate for this position – one whose leadership could benefit Republicans significantly in years ahead. After all, he is no stranger to standing up for what he believes in while also being well respected by those around him – two traits essential when taking up such a prestigious role within US politics today.
