Anton McParland, Chief of Staff for Rep. Peltola, released a statement on X expressing shock and devastation at the sudden loss: “We are devastated to share that Mary’s husband, Eugene Peltola Jr.—‘Buzzy’ to all of us who knew and loved him—passed away earlier this morning following a plane accident in Alaska. He was one of those people that was obnoxiously good at everything. He had a delightful sense of humor that lightened the darkest moments. He was definitely the cook in the family. And family was most important to him. He was completely devoted to his parents, kids, siblings, extended family, and friends – and he simply adored Mary. We are heartbroken for the family’s loss.”
Hailing from western Alaska, Rep. Peltola is one of few Native Americans currently serving in Congress after being elected just last year – having served multiple terms in the state’s legislative body from 1999-2009 as well as a judge for Orutsararmiut Native Council and Bethel City Council member prior to her election into Congress.
Condolences have since poured out from fellow colleagues including Reps Gerry Connolly (D-Va.) and John James (R-MI).
Connolly expressed “our hearts are with you and your family today” while James wrote “you and your family are in my prayers.”
I am so terribly sorry, @Rep_Peltola. Our hearts are with you and your family today. https://t.co/c1bw07Zt5n

This tragedy brings forth once again how fragile life can be – it can be taken away so suddenly without warning or notice; yet it also serves as reminder how much we must cherish our time here on earth with our families – no amount of money or power can bring them back when they’re gone.
Our thoughts remain with Congresswoman Mary Peltola during this difficult time, may she find peace despite her loss soon enough.
